Shimon Peres Congressional Gold Medal Commemoration Committee

In recognition of Israeli President Shimon Peres’ work and leadership, Members of the US Congress introduced legislation to award the President Peres the Congressional Gold Medal.

The Congressional Gold Medal recognizes those who have performed an achievement that has an impact on American history and culture that is likely to be recognized as a major achievement in the recipient's field long after the achievement.

In recognition of Israeli President Shimon Peres's statesmanship and leadership, members of the United States Congress introduced legislation to award President Peres with a Congressional Gold Medal. President Shimon Peres became one of merely nine people to be honored with both a Congressional Gold Medal as well as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which President Obama presented him in 2012. Among the other nine dual recipients include, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr. and Elie Wiesel.

The legislation was a bipartisan effort that was introduced on August 1, 2013 in the Senate by Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH).  They firmly believe President Peres is worthy of this honor because he played a pivotal role in forging the strong and unbreakable bond between the Unites States and Israel.

Additionally, identical legislation was introduced in the House by Representatives Trent Franks (R-AR) and Joe Kennedy (D-MA).

The Congressional Gold Medal recognizes the achievements of an individual whose impact is likely to be recognized by history.

The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest award bestowed by the Legislative Branch of the United States government. The decoration is awarded to any individual who performs an outstanding deed or act of service to the security, prosperity, and national interest of the United States of America.
